Acharya Maulana Shams Naved Usmani

The history of time has seen brilliant minds working selflessly for the humankind. These people have walked the earth with different goals, but pointing towards benefitting the world at large. One of such great men was Acharya Maulana Shams Naved Usmani. He was a teacher by profession and philosopher by nature, spending his time teaching, praying, and wondering about the problems created by humanity as it moved away from the teachings of the Creator.

The turning point of his life was in 1979 with the Siege of Mecca, the holiest place in Islamic belief.

One of the pretenders of Mehdiyat desecrated Ka’abah for a fortnight and for the first time in the last 1400 years, Ka’abah was deprived of Adhan, prayers, and circumambulation. This act of humans on the house of God made him realise, ‘the disturbances have even crept in the House of God and he is still concerned with the livelihood!’

Acharya Maulana Shams Naved Usmani decided to dedicate his life to the Creator, for reforming humanity by bringing them closer to the Lord and each other. An avid scholar of Islamic, Hindu, Christian, Buddhist, Jain, and Sikh scriptures, he started working on communal harmony, peace, and imparting knowledge of similar grounds in different faiths. He opted for early retirement and started sharing the knowledge he earned through his studies with an and everyone he met. The first six years of this transition proved to be extremely challenging, as the income grew meager and people started calling him insane, opportunist, or even an agent promoting propaganda.

With time, few inspired young men joined his cause to discuss the evils of humanity and how they could be solved. Even the people who opposed his work visited him for teachings on spirituality. In 1990, Acharya Maulana Shams Naved Usmani granted permission to one of his disciples Syed Abdullah Tariq to form an organization to take the message of truth to the people. He named the organization ‘World Organisation of Religions & Knowledge’ (WORK) and asked his other disciples to follow Syed Abdullah Tariq in organizational matters.

On the morning of August 26, 1993 his worldly life abruptly came to an end when he rose for early morning prayers. He was survived by his life-mate Mrs. Khadeja Naved Usmani.
